Coach Shreck Workout 7-28-10

I had a request that I show you what I do in my personal workouts.  Well I actually have had many requests to do another video workout since my last one I did.  So I had my flip camera in the weight room and filmed a few reps of each exercise I was doing that day.  Here is that workout:

Kettlebell Oblique Raise (Windmill) 3-5 reps on each side

Kettlebell 2 Hand Swing 10-12 reps

TRX Push-up 10-12 reps

TRX Mountain Climbers 30 reps

Gym Rings Lying Pull-up 10-12 reps

5 Complete Rounds with little rest

This form of training is called circuit training or going from one exercise to another with little to no rest between each exercise.  I have been doing much more of this type of training recently because I can get more done in a shorter period of time.  Hey, the life of a strength coach is crazy and I really do not have much “free” time for myself.  I love it when people tell me they just don’t have enough time to workout.  When I ask them how many hours a day they work and they say 8 hours a day; I just can’t help it when I laugh at them since I average 12 hours a day.  Managing their time wisely is usually the problem as they sit there and watch a rerun of their favorite TV show.  EVERYONE needs some type of physical activity so as the Nike ads say-”just do it”.

If you feel that filming and sharing some of my personal workouts with you is helping you to come up with some training ideas for exercises and developing yourself a program; then just let me know and I will continue these clips a few times a month.  This website was originally put together to get training information out to people who seek it and will apply it.  All YOU have to do is request what you want to learn and/or see and I will do my best to fulfill those requests.

To your health,

Jerry

  1. Looks like your swings are more of a squat+front raise at the end. Very different from both RKC and GS standard swings. Just curious.

    • Erik,
Thanks for the comment. I personally teach a more of a squat then a thrust from the hips during the swing. Trust me i am doing NO front raise; all of the power is coming from my hips. That is a pretty heavy bell! I have gotten great results with my athletes with this style of swing.

  2. Is there a reason why you teach more of a squat than a bend pattern for the swing? Again, just curious. thanks!

    • Erik,
This is an excellent question! I have discussed these techniques with a Master RKC instructor and a world known kettlebell guru and in our discussions they both found this technique, although just a slight variation, very much acceptable. My main reason for this slight variation is for teaching progressions. I literally have 600+ athletes I instruct a year and over the last 10 years this has been the easiest and quickest for athletes to learn and then progress with other techniques. RKC & GS Style swings are sometimes used with some of my athletes. Extension and power through the hips is always my top priority. Thanks for the question!!

  3. kettle bells are over rated.

    • JWarner,
Sorry you feel that way. The kettlebell to me is just another training tool; that for me, I have seen some great results with. My main training tool is and probably always will be the barbell but as you may know by reading my articles-I like variety in my workouts. I also enjoy training with dumbbells, sandbags, Kegs, bands, ropes, Atlas stones, and pretty much anything else that can be picked up. Progression can be achived by any one tool. I have found that adding soe variety into your program will progress you much quicker. What tools are you currently training with?
